It's always been easy to fall in love with the city. The enticing neon lights, the powerful yet beautiful steel towers that crown the horizon, the adrenaline rush one gets from the busyness of its nightlife...some may never want it to end. For the citizens of Bela City, it never does. You see, Bela City is a metropolis cursed for eternity to be engulfed by permanent night. The identities of the ones responsible for the curse and the reasons for their decision is knowledge that is now only whispered amongst the members of the mysterious Organization, a crime syndicate controlled by thirteen members who are currently locked in a war against each other for the power over the city's insidious underground scene. In spite of this, however, the city still manages to attract thousands upon thousands of citizens, all ignorant of the fact that once they arrive in Bela City, there is no way of escaping the darkness that will eventually consume their hearts.

Most of Bela's citizens remain blissfully unaware of the war raging in the undeveloped neighborhoods below the city. They lead their lives as best as they can: building their careers, finding love, even raising families. They arrive in the city, falling easily into step towards a promising future lit up in neon. In return for living in this exciting locale, the city places a touch of evil in their lives, a vice which would be foreign to their character in any other situation. This "curse" is said to be the Devil's way of claiming what is rightfully his...

Mods are the only ones allowed to add and give general descriptions to city areas, but the players are encouraged to come up with points of interests that will be dotted throughout the city. Want to start a small flower shop in the slums? Just throw us a comment here giving us;

A mod will then put a red link on the 'District 8' entry of the Wiki, and you can edit the page to your heart's content. Comments are pruned regularly.

Once you've made and outfitted your journal, please friend the following communities.

Main Community - a.k.a. the IC community. This community is a random message board on the net; it is accessible to all and everything posted here is public for all members to see. Your character can post whatever he desires to post, just as long as it's IC. From here, characters can also send private messages to each other in the form of PMs. PMs work the same way that filters do: if Character A wants to send a PM to Character B (or multiple characters), you only need to make a post in the community and mark it as a PM, specifying the recipient(s) in the subject line. The comments to that particular post are also, of course, PMs. You cannot filter normal posts, sorry.

OOC Community - This is where the muns are to make all their announcements. Post here if you want to introduce yourself to the rest or the community, alert others when you pick up and drop muses, of announce hiatuses. This is also where you plot out any minor events and find other characters to interact with. Mods will use this community to announce updates and activity checks, so make sure you have this particular community friended with your personal journal so you don't miss out on anything!

Log Community - This is where all logs and threads dealing with the offline interaction of two or more characters are to be posted. If you've made messenger and email accounts for your characters, you are encouraged to post any conversations you've had using those mediums here as well. Topography

Bela is a city that is built on the island of Antas, which lies lies about one hundred and fifty miles east of Naples, Italy (and is therefore cosidered part of the country). The lands of the western part of the island consist mainly of the Farsa Mountains, a fairly tall mountain range that also serves as something of the island backbone, snaking along the western and southern coasts of Antas before halting at the shores of Lake Cristallo. Bela takes up the eastern portion of the island, with the airport and only suburban area of the city bordering its northern edges. The stretch of land that starts at this point and ends at Lake Cristallo and the Farsas is mainly uninhabited and barren, and is dotted by swamp areas, eternally dying forests, and (particularly in the south) badlands. It should also be noted that Antas Island has a very extensive cave system. The largest of the caves are situated under Bela City, and serves as part of the city's slum area.

Climate

Like all areas of the Mediterranean, Antas Island is dry during its summers and rainy during its winters. Due to the fact that the island receives no sunlight, it is rare for summer temperatures to top 30°C and the average winters more often than not bring with them snow in higher elevations. Inhabitants of the island enjoy pleasant weather year-round (as pleasant as it can get without the presence of sunlight, anyway), and find that this one reason alone could keep them anchored to the Island of Eternal Night. However, there is a short period of time between the months of October and November when cruel winds from the south tear through the island. While these winds don't deal any physical damage to the many architectural structures of the island, they carry with them something ominous, almost as if the winds were blown out of the mouth of a sinister god. Needless to say, it isn't uncommon for inhabitants to act a bit more devious during this time of year.

Demography

As of 2006, Bela is the eighth largest city by population in the world. Given that statistic, you can expect to see faces that hail from every corner of the globe. An estimated 20% of its 10 million inhabitants are foreign-born (a good portion of the remaining 80% are likely no more than third generation inhabitants), with thousands upon thousands of tourists and business people flooding its streets at any given point. Granted, because of the location of the island, most visitors hail from neighboring Meditterranean countries. But Bela promises something for everyone, regardless of race, heritage, age and gender.

Time

The world of the game is parallel to our world: times (all hours are GMT +1) events, trends, cultures, etc. are all concurrent with those of the real world.

Bela is made of eight different districts. Within these districts are residential buildings, shops, theaters, and other areas of interest that your character might want to check out!

Business District

Everything that attracts the outside world to Bela City is located within its magnificent corporate center. From the exalted business and residential towers that make up the district core, to the shops and bars whose signs baptize the streets in an effulgent neon light, to the electric beat that saturates the atmosphere from the underground dance clubs, the business district has something that would draw even the most godly of souls. The business district does have its tamer side: souvenir shops, cafés, and high-end restaurants line the streets. There are quite a number of these establishments, to cater to the vast number of tourists that visit the city. The most prominent building in the district is the Silverwarren Tower, a 108-floor business building located next to the Bela Stock Exchange.

China Town

Bela City's Chinatown is only "Chinatown" in name. Although all the buildings in the district house Chinese restaurants and curio shops, Chinatown is better known as the city's red-light district. Unlike most other Chinatowns in the world, Bela's is not a place that your average tourist would wish to find himself in. The streets are grimy, the air, almost unbreathable. In fact, the only people who venture into the streets of this section of the city are those of Chinese descent and citizens who wish to pick up a cheap harlot.

Cultural Centre

As its name suggests, the cultural centre is the home of Bela's many museums, theatres, specialty shoppes and fine dining establishments, as well as a few hotels. The old mayor's mansion is also located in this particular district and serves as a museum of the city's history. The cleanest district of the city, the cultural centre is defined by the breathtaking architecture of its buildings, its narrow cobblestone streets, and the serenity of its waterside areas. Bela University is located here.

The Docks

Another decidedly shady area of the city, the docks are the place to go to get your drug fix. This would also be the place to go to buy goods from the black market. The only business any upstanding citizen would have here is if he worked here loading and/or unloading ships.

The Wharf

The Wharf is a magnificent area of the city where both children and adult come to play. American tourists often refer the city as the "Atlantic City of the Med" because of this area alone. The Wharf is composed of two areas: a collection of actual wharfs that are used for the cruise industry and a boardwalk that lines the western shore of the city. Family amusements line the boardwalk alongside of five-star hotels, casinos, first-class restaurants, and high end shops and flagships. If you're lucky (and wealthy) enough, you just might be able to purchase permanent living space on the top floors of hotels and casinos.

East End

The East End is actually a community just outside the eastern borders of the city. Most of the population of Antas resides here, as homes are build in this area specifically for the lower middle class. There are two schools in this area as well; an primary school and a secondary school. There are also affordable shops and places of interest here to cater to the lower class.

Heatherbridge

Heatherbridge is to the upper-middle class what the East End is to the lower-middle class, the only difference being that the residential areas are gated. A general hospital that attends to the needs of every individual on the island (regardless of income) is located here, along with a mall and a very prestigious private school.

District 8

District 8 is the name given to the cave underneath Bela that serves as the city's slum area. Most tourists that visit the city have no idea that this district exists. In fact, residents of the undeground are forbidden to leave the cave due to the fact that the slums are contaminated with disease. No permanent housing exists in District 8; families are left to look for whatever form of shelter they can get their hands on, and will do any and everything to in their power to claim and keep something as meaningless as a cardboard box.

The citizens of the city above are under the impression that the residents of the caves are nothing more than rabid animals who have been restricted from ever surfacing for the betterment of society. This mindset has been around almost as long as the city itself has, and very few attempts have been made by anyone to give any form of help to the needy below.

GENERAL

✵ You have to be at least 15 years of age to play this game. Period.

✵ You are required to have your own personal LiveJournal to play this game, sorry. What's more, your LiveJournal is to be registered with an e-mail address that you regularly check. This is for your benefit, really. This way you will be able to receive notifications, nudges, etc.

✵ We ask that all applicants have a strong command of the English language. This means that the applicant must have a working knowledge of English vocabulary, grammar, and composition. This also means that you should not look forward to a positive response to your application just because English is your mother tongue. We recommend that you run your application through a spell/grammar check before posting - it is to be completely devoid of errors. Perfection isn't demanded of any of your following posts; however, please attempt to use correct spelling and grammar when playing.

✵ Whatever a mod says, goes. The mods are more carefully chosen than the disciples of Christ. Bad reference aside, a mod really does know what they're doing when they reject an application or tell you that you're doing something wrong. There's no point in trying to argue over their "wrongdoing". You'll only be shown out of the community's proverbial back door if you attempt such an action

✵ Keep OOC drama out of the game. Nobody besides you and maybe your closest friends cares about your beef with so-and-so. If you have a problem with the way someone is playing a character, fine. Confront a mod or two with your concerns and we'll see what we can do. Under no circumstances should try to attempt to play out your elitist fantasies of exposing an out-of-character fiend and dragging his username through the dirt just to boost your e-go.

✵ No godmoding or metagaming is allowed. Even if someone gives you permission to do whatever you want with their character, it's still not allowed. IN-GAME

✵ Activity. There will be activity sweeps once every month. If you aren't around and you haven't posted a hiatus notice, your character will be automatically dropped. You may make an appeal to the mods by sending an email to nightseternalmods{@}gmail{.}com, stating the name you applied with, your LJ handle, the characters that were dropped, and the reason you were absent during activity sweeps.

✵ Please remain in-character. This is an alternate universe role play. The situations and settings may be different, but you are not allowed to drastically alter your character's personality.
